I am Josh Larsen. Who am I, and what am I doing at Wordplay?
I am a 28-year-old Aussie, born and raised in Perth, WA. I grew up in Mirrabooka on the north side of the river and spent my former years in the KGB areas. I spent the majority of this time perfecting my career in drug use (surprise, surprise) until 2010, when I decided enough was enough and so began my on-off again cycle with relapse and recovery.
It was during these years that my passion for hip-hop (more so Australian hip-hop) really came into play. It’s safe to say that a lot of the tracks I listened to were majorly recovery relapse or drug use orientated. My passion lies in the real talk rap. The honest hip hop. The stuff that creates thought and questions the way that today’s society is being governed.
Around June 2015, I stumbled upon an advert on Gumtree for a journalist in the hip hop scene (I know right, what a coincidence). I went onto have the interview and though it was a volunteer job (which worked well for me because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and well, honestly, I still don’t…) it got me free access to gigs and the ability to find common ground with local MC’s.
Sure I’d love to be on stage but to be honest I don’t know if I have the gift. It was my own personal miracle and it sparked a passion inside of me. The dilemma became my unmanageability. Sure I was passionate, sure I was creative but I also got so messy at gigs I could never really remember them to write about them. At times I wouldn’t even arrive at the gigs I’d be so far gone on a binge.
It was around this time that I reached out to the CEO of the company as I had become homeless throughout this period of my life. The CEO let me stay at her place and I am forever grateful for this. But an addict is always an addict right? I needed something a little more ass-whoopingish. So I found myself a residential rehab. It’s taken me 2 years. 3 visits but I am back with Wordplay ready and fired up.
I have a little more life experience and a lot more understanding. Sure I have a bit of catching up to do but please, WATCH THIS SPACE.
