WAM Festival 2014 officially kicked off last night at a packed out Bakery. The rainy weather didn’t hold anyone back from havin’ a bit of a jam and a lil’ booty shake to the likes of Fait, Hideous Sun Demon, Pat Chow, Tired Lion, Scalphunter, Usurper of Modern Medicine, and Mt. Mountain (with an extra dosage of fun from DJ Jamie Mac’s groove-inducing track selection between sets).
Standouts included an atmospheric and beautifully eerie set from Fait (solo project of Elise Higgins plus her fab live band), topped off with some dreamy visuals;
Hideous Sun Demon delivered a wildly energetic set, complete with colourful dance moves from their eccentric frontman, the ever effervescent Vin. Their token craziness onstage was (and almost always is) a sure-fire crowd rouser. Hideous are quite the riot.
And Tired Lion stole the prize last night for highest amount of hair flicking in one set. Fabulous, shrieking frontgal, Sophie Hopes, wowed the room with a voice like fire and hair like Rapunzel, with rocky, poppy, funky, fun tunes to match.
If the opening party was anything to go by, this weekend is gonna be nuts. With all the fun ‘n’ fame of the WAM Awards getting underway tonight, as well as the WA Music Conference, and the Saturday Spectacular spanning all over town from midday tomorrow, there’s a poop-load of yummy stuff to see and do this weekend that’s sure to satisfy your musical hunger. Hurrah for West Australian music!
