Whenever I go to a writing class at University, there is always at least one person who believes that Science Fiction and Fantasy novels are in some way inferior to the literary classics. However, if one goes online and searches for ‘100 Books to Read Before You Die,’ there are always Fantasy and Science Fiction novels that are high on the list, and almost always Lord of the Rings is the first one to be named.
Now, I love Lord of the Rings, you could say I am a bit of a fanatic. However, there are hundreds of fantasy and science fiction novels that are less dense and not so prone to smother you in information – because let’s face it, Lord of the Rings is both dense and a huge information dump.
So, here is my own list – albeit a very short one – of Science Fiction and Fantasy novels that you should read by the end of the year. This list will not include Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
