Wordplay interviews Detroit producer Tall Black Guy in the lead up to his Australian tour show in Perth at The Manor next Friday 19th September.
This is your first time to Australia, what can fans expect from your set?
A selection of the samples that I have used and a collection of music I have made over the years.
What do you love most about touring nationally and internationally?
Well, this is my first tour ever, so I want to have much fun as possible and enjoy the experience.
You recently worked on I Digress with 80’s Babies and Dee Jackson, what can you tell us about that track?
Dee Jackson and myself have been making music together for over 10 years. Since I moved over to the UK., we aren’t able to vibe and create with each other as much as we would like to. This track came from Dee wanting to just show his lyrical ability without any song structure. So, he had sent me over a capella and I made the beat around his lyrics.
You are from Detroit, tell us the influence Dilla has on you and your music?
I like what Dilla brought to the table as far as his production skills. But, he really wasn’t a big influence for me. I was mostly influenced and inspired by DJ Premier for his chopping ability and Pete Rock for how he layered 5-6 samples.
Slowly since 2011 you have been releasing some of your beautiful music on vinyl, tell us about that process and your decision to do so.
It’s a mixture of indie labels, DJ’s, and distributors all reaching out to me through all the different social media platforms. Me and my wife/manager work collectively to figure what is the best outlet to go through.
What work/collaborations do you have in the making?
I always have to keep that information top secret. Lol! Stay tuned though.
