9pm Friday night at Northbridge Nandos, where an unsuspecting table of peri peri chicken holds host to a collective of rascals known only as Spilt Cities. Colosoul sat down to chew the fat with guitarists Shaun Rodan and Zac Ward, Bassist Michael Kinnane Ewings and drummer James Porteous
Where Did The Band Start?
Shaun: Zac and I been friends for a long time. We used to skate and when skating got to painful we played guitar. Spilt Cities (Commonly confused with Split Cities) formed 2 years ago with a different bass player. After 6 months Mike joined after the previous lineup brokeup and we decided to changed our sound. Michael used to go to uni with James, where they spent most of the time ditching uni to go jam. Since Mike joined we have recorded a single and an EP last year.
How Would You Describe Spilt Cities Sound?
Zac: Really Kinda Confusing, Loud Melodic Strange/Something.
Shaun:This is something we’ve been struggling to do ourselves
Who Are Your Influences?
Mike: Our biggest influences would be Brand New, Modest Mouse and Queens of the Stoneage.
What’s Songwriting Like?
James: Really slow. Zac or Shaun would bring a whole song to the band at first but now they bring an idea and we’ll all jam it out… slowly.
Best way to waste 10g?
Shaun: We’d Heist more bands, get more money – its a scheme.
Mike: Not a waste is it,
Shaun: Yeah thats true, so then I guess we’d have to just start funding something/someone terrible
James: maybe we’ll start funding one direction.
