Perth music lovers are in for a treat in September with the international production Marvin Gaye Let’s Get It On comes to town for a special season at The Regal Theatre in Subiaco.
The show, featuring an all-star cast of award winning musicians such as Andrew De Silva and Vika Bull, is the brainchild of Australian promoters Simon Myers and Moira Bennett’s company ROOM 8. Their other production, written by acclaimed UK author John Livings (who also wrote At Last The Etta James Story) has been earning acclaim around the country, and the story behind the music of Marvin Geay is destined to do the same.
Marvin Gaye Let’s Get it On is a two-hour narrative concert celebrating the life and music of the multi-talented musician, singer and songwriter who was considered the ‘Prince of Motown – The Prince of Soul’. Featuring some of Marvin’s most beloved songs, including I Heard It Through The Grapevine, A’int No Mountain High Enough, Let’s Get It On, his stunning spiritual masterwork What’s Going On, the Grammy Award-winning Sexual Healing to name a few.
Marvin’s was the voice that formed the soundtrack to countless liaisons in the 60s and 70s. His reign as one of the most influential musicians on the music scene was tragically ended 30 years ago, and the scale of that tragedy is reinforced through the retelling of his story. From the opening number (Stars and Stripes in Marvin-style), to the finale, the show channels everything that made Marvin Gaye special, in a tribute that is more music than musical, more lyrics than script. It explores Marvin’s humble beginnings, his troubled relationship with his father, his search for meaning and the music that defined a generation.
Andrew De Silva takes the lead role in Marvin Gaye Let’s Get it On. Already well-known on the Australian music scene, Andrew is recognised for his diversity. He shot to fame as a member of the 1990s RnB group CDB and most recently won the 2012 prime time television show reality series Australia’s Got Talent. Throughout his career, he has toured both Australia and overseas and has supported the likes of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. His latest material, an infectious dance track with serious grooves titled I See The Future, has been receiving rave reviews.
For Andrew, performing in a show playing tribute to a Motown legend is a perfect fit with his musical background. “Marvin Gaye has always been one of my idols,” he says. “I’m extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to portray this music icon on stage.”
Joining the cast is another revered Australian artist, Vika Bull. Vika is considered one of the country’s most powerful female voices and has supported a swag of legendary musicians throughout her career, such as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Sting and Joe Cocker. Over the last few years, she has been performing the lead role in At Last The Etta James Story, taking the show to every major theatre in Australia and receiving continuous praise and critical acclaim. She kicked off her career with the Black Sorrows in the late 1980s and went on to establish a genre of her own with sister Linda.
Andrew and Vika will be backed by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians in The Funk City Band. There is no doubt, Marvin Gaye Let’s Get It On will have you dancing in the street!
The show will run for one week only from
