The unbelievable happened, two worlds collided resulting in the best Christmas present I could ever have hoped for. Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah playing a free alleyway show at the grilled cheese named in honour of him: Toastface Grillah. I don’t think that when they named it they ever could have imagined Ghostface would turn up and play a show there.
I guess we’ve got the weekend breakfast presenter of Triple J, Kyron Wheatley for namedropping Toastface to Ghostface. Ghostface is in town, having played at Metro City last night with Pharoahe Monch, and evidently decided to check out this hip-hop themed food outlet (get the ‘Notorious B.A.G.’ if you ever go, it’s got bacon, apple, and gouda in it).
So there I was with a few hundred people crowded into Grand Theatre Lane outside of Toastface Grillah, seeing the man himself, Ghostface Killah step up onto the back of ute to lay down the law on the mic playing thorugh hits such as ‘Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F’ Wit’ as well as sending up the late great Ol’ Dirty Bastard by playing ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ before telling the audience how much he loves Australia and that if we ever want him or Wu-Tang to play here we just have to message their promoter and it will happen (Metric Promotions, get on it).
Ghostface Killah has a new album, 36 Seasons, which is on sale now. Get it here.
