Drinking in the Words with a Cup of Tea

– by Revathie Dhanabalan

Today’s bookshops often have adjoined cafes, a place where customers can meet to not only read but to sip and chat in an unhurried space that tea, books and armchairs create. Melissa Thompson takes the cake for that ultimate dream job – at least in my case that is!

The owner of Tea House Books, Melissa is doing her community a great service by matching up book lovers with a teashop in the back! In addition to that, she is part of the floundering breed of independent bookstores that has been breathing life into our corporate world. And hey! It’s definitely a plus point that she does have cakes as well.

Just as each book in this Tea House Books holds a special place in Melissa’s heart ever since she was a child, the teashop out in the back is just as important. “Books were my best friends, they took me on adventures, taught me that were a million lives to be lived”. The teashop out in the back is not only for aesthetic appeal – but I must say it is a gorgeous space! “The space was created for mothers to be able to waited on and maybe enjoy a delicious cup of tea and cake on the side”.

IMG_0164Tea House Books connects with people at some personal level and there have been countless number of memorable moments. There have been certainly a number of unexpected famous people that have been through the doors of Tea House Books. “My life long hero Andrew Denton made my life complete earlier this year with some unexpected shopping in my store!” But Melissa’s best moments can be described as an ‘ah ha!’ moment when she works out what her customer is looking for – “whether it’s in store or I need to order it in – it is the most rewarding”.

IMG_0167Tea House Books is an ‘institution’ for many of the locals in Denmark. “It is the most fulfilling feeling! We’ve been blessed with many authors visiting us”. And with more plans for the future, Tea House Books is definitely a space to watch. And if she was to invite Richard Morias, author of The Hundred Foot Journey to Tea House Books, I know I would take that five hour drive down to Denmark!
