Sydney’s very own Boy & Bear are back with a brand new album, Limit of Love, set to be released Friday October 9, 2015. What’s more, the five-piece have already released the album’s first single ‘Walk The Wire’.
Boy & Bear teamed up with producer Ethan Johns (known for his work with Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams, and Kaiser Chiefs) at Peter Gabriel’s UK Real World Studio to record Limit of Love the old fashion way — live in the studio, straight to tape, with no overdubs.
Following a massive touring schedule in 2014 — 170 shows across three continents — Boy & Bear decided to take the monument they had gathered on the road directly into the studio.
Front man Dave Hosking took the almost-unheard-of challenges of recording his vocals live with the band.
“What made it less intimidating was having someone like Ethan there, who is such an advocate for it,” Hosking said. “He put it on the table at our first meeting, that he’s be very keen to at least try going for it as a first approach. When we left the meeting we felt pretty good about it. We were up for the challenge.”
Fuelled by a gritty guitar and synth groove, and lifted by the honest, organic production style employed by Johns, the lead single Walk The Wire is a bold new statement of intent.
Another first for the quintet was writing the album as a group. With the demands of last year’s touring Hosking — usually the band’s main songwriter — hadn’t had the time to craft fully fledged songs. Majority of the writing for Limit of Love took place in the first half of 2015. It was in these sessions that Killian Gavin, Tim Hart, Jon Hart, Dave Symes, and Dave Hosking collaborated for the first time on a number of songs including ‘Walk The Wire.’
“From my end, that new writing method is quite liberating and exciting,” Hosking said. “It means I can still do what I love — sit in my living room and pick up a guitar and sort of purge, plus there’s now double the amount of songs coming in from the band, so we’re drawing from a wider pool.”
Since forming in 2009, Boy & Bear’s debut album Moonfire, released in 2011, reached double platinum sales, won five ARIA Awards, and saw three songs enter Triple J’s Hottest 100. Their sophomore album Harlequin Dream, released in 2013, debuted at #1 on the ARIA Ablum Chart, achieved 10 consecutive weeks in the Top 10, and was nominated for three ARIA awards that year.
Internationally, Boy & Bear have seen huge success in North America with their single Southern Sun reaching Top 5 on the Triple A Top 30 Chart for five weeks straight. As well as USA Today naming the band one of “Five Australian Acts You Need To Know Now.”
Limit of Love is less about fine-tuning everything and more about capturing a band at the height of their powers in an organic and honest way. It is an approach most bands would be afraid to try these days. But for Boy & Bear the leap of faith has prove to work well.
The follow-up to their #1 ARIA Album and platinum-selling Harlequin Dream, Limit of Love will be released on Friday October 9 through Universal Music Australia.
