The city of Melbourne is filled with creative and unique individuals who are inspired by the city’s beauty and colour, so it’s no wonder that Arabella Strachan found her passion for style in her very own back yard.
The Arabella India label came into fruition after being developed over the last 5 years. The inspired designs were conceived and created in a bungalow studio out the back of her mum’s suburban home. After studying fashion design at Box Hill Institute and living in London for 18 months, with a resume that includes working at London’s prestigious lingerie boutique Rigby & Peller, (appointed corsetiere to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, no less). Arabella returned home to her beloved Melbourne, full of ideas and a new burst of inspiration and determination to establish herself as the Arabella India label and to finely bring her garments to life.
Arabella’s idea for the business was built from a need to express herself in a creative and personalised manner. As the label is still in its infancy, she admits there is a “fair amount of self-mastery involved because you are the business, this has been a personal journey of self-discovery and development so far, and it continues every day”. This persistence and dedication has started to pay off, with the label slowly gaining much needed exposure over the last six months.
With each garment carefully designed and crafted by hand using organic cottons, bamboo jersey, silk and digital prints, the focus remains on bringing the best quality garments to the customer whilst staying ahead of the trends. Through this passion, attention to detail can literally be seen in every single garment. When describing the idea behind her designs she explains, “(The label) came about after I spent a year in London working for two very different lingerie companies. One very conservative and traditional, the other erotic and overt in a fashion forward sought of way. I learnt a lot, and came back to Melbourne determined to start my own label which sits between these two extremes.”
With a growing range of the Arabella India label becoming available, the philosophy of incorporating a fashion forward, comfortable lingerie remains paramount. When asked how she would best describe her designs she suggests that, the “statement pieces are designed to be seen and worn as outer wear by the more adventurous, and displayed more discreetly by others.” The designs are created with all sorts of women in mind, with the end result being to “always make woman feel great in the garments.” She continues with her vision, “that we can all wear beautiful, special lingerie just for ourselves; no one has to see it, but all the better for it if they do!”
