Misleading Misandry…

sticker,375x360.u4By Karen Hansord

The Feminist Movement has changed a lot over the years; generations of women have fought over their rights to be seen as equal to men and their efforts were hard won. But somehow the word ‘feminism’ started to mean something completely different to what it once was. Somehow, someone started to think that feminists were these groups of harpy-like women who vomited hate and misandry. This idea permeated throughout society, and even though it was not an entirely new idea, it has now become the widespread opinion of what feminism and feminists stand for.

The truth is however, that any woman who campaigns towards the hatred of men is not a feminist, but a sexist, a point that is forgotten by all who think that feminists are bad people.

21st Century feminists believe in equality for all, and to break down the social stigmas and double standards that quietly oppress society every day. There are some who believe that women have nothing more to complain about and that they are no longer being oppressed. But this idea is dangerous, for it forces people to become blind to the remarks, ideas, opinions and double standards that hurt society as a whole.

There are people who still believe that when a woman has multiple sexual partners they are ‘sluts’, ‘whores’ and ‘skanks’, while their male counterparts are revered by their peers. There are people who believe that when a woman wears a short skirt she is ‘inviting’ men to sexually harass or to rape her. And there are people who still think that a female protagonist in a movie, television series or book will never become popular with the wider audience.

But this is not all that 21st Century feminists fight against.

There are people who still believe that when a young boy wants to play with dolls and wear skirts there is something ‘wrong’ with him. There are people who still believe that a man who does not possess traditional masculine qualities is weak, ‘a pussie’ and ‘gay’. And there are people who still believe that men cannot be raped.

But this is not all that 21st Century feminists fight against.

There are people who still believe that those in the LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual) community choose their sexual orientation. There are people who still believe that using the word ‘gay’ as a slur, or to mean ‘stupid’ is funny and not offensive. And there are people who still believe that marriage equality is wrong and will bring forth the ruin of modern society.

21st Century feminists fight for everyone, they fight for the equality of all. It is not about building a matriarchal society, it is not about hating men, it is not about judging others and it is not about putting people into neat little categories for the benefit of ourselves.

Feminism is equal rights and people need to remember that.
