Gamba ooze the funk on debut single “Leave the Boy Behind”
By LOUIS HUMBERSTONE
Local Indie Pop act Gamba charge out of the blocks with debut single “Leave the Boy Behind”. The track is infused with touches of Pop and Funk, and the result is an incredibly tight single, especially considering the band only began in late 2014.
With its snappy guitars and soaring vocals, “Leave the Boy Behind” kicks into full gear by the chorus, which is memorable and effortless with the vocal hooks “Don’t leave the boy behind. In particular, lead singer Tessa S shines as a powerful voice that fits perfectly into the context of the song. As the primary songwriter of Gamba, Tessa S stands alongside a growing number of talented female artists that are rapidly changing the local scene.
Apparently inspired by an awkward and painful separation, “Leave the Boy Behind” is relatable as it explores the tension of not letting go and trying to move on. Lines like “shed your skin/ and I’ll shed mine” jump out as examples of Gamba’s style of writing, and the band cleverly set the themes to an upbeat track that steers clear of clichéd break-up tracks.
Recorded at Rada Studios with the help of producer Matt Gio, “Leave the Boy Behind” follows a year and a half of songwriting and local gigging. Although a fledgling project, 2017 looks set to be a big year for Gamba!
