    FUTURE SHORTS APRIL EDITION
By Leslee Hall

Future Shorts has quickly become an event I look forward to attending each month. The comfy couches of the Velvet Lounge paired with an otherwise inaccessible program of international films makes for a really enjoyable evening every time. Every film this month was thoroughly enjoyable, but there were a couple of stand outs. Read more >>

    THE TEMPEST
By Leslee Hall

This modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest is interesting in many ways. It is interesting in that it does not seem very modern at all – the special effects are not particularly epic, and it maintains the Shakespearean language and structure that is alien to many modern film goers. The one modern change is casting Helen Mirren as Prospera, as opposed to the original version in which the main character is a man, Prospero.

    FAST FIVE
By Tegan Miller

The first action scene of the latest in The Fast and the Furious series is somewhat reassuring in its insanity. That you can flip a bus by braking a sports car in front of it is the insanity, that the minds behind the franchise decide to give it a go is the reassurance. From the very start we know we can expect more of the fast cars, attractive people and barely plausible plotlines that we’ve come to know. Read more >>

    BRIGHTON ROCK
By Patricia Higgins

A quick web search of reviews of the 2010 film Brighton Rock elicits a litany of criticisms - the main charge being that the film is an affront to the sensibilities of the original 1947 adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic 1938 novel of the same title. Film critics view director Rowan Joffe’s re-work as akin to a travesty (the 1947 film stars an apparently incomparable Richard Attenborough). Read more >>

    SUCKER PUNCH
By Tegan Miller

Zack Snyder represents almost everything that worries me about modern cinema. As established by his earlier films 300 and Watchmen his grasp of visual effects and thus films that look gorgeous is undeniable. His grasp of coherent narrative, compelling characters and audience satisfaction? Not so much. Read more >>

    GRIFF THE INVISIBLE
By Matthew Savino

As a fan of the superhero genre and a collector of comic books, the premise of Griff The Invisible appealed to my nerd-like sensibilities. Normal office worker by day, protector of the streets at night - we've been there have we not? Or maybe it is just me. This film was an attempt to marry that genre with those of the quirky, offbeat and romantic persuasion, so lets put on our cape and get into it. Read more >>

    HOP
By Tegan Miller

Hop is the newest evidence that Hollywood is running out of ideas. You can just imagine the back-and-forth in the brainstorming room that would have resulted in the latest animated effort from Universal. Read more >>

    PAUL
By Tegan Miller

I’m just putting this out there; Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are my ultimate bromance. I love them dearly in all their nerdy and hilarious glory. Having previously paired up for cult favourites Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz I had high hopes for their newest feature, Paul. Read more >>

    BARNEY'S VERSION
By Matthew Savino

Paul Giamatti had won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical for this role and partnered with screen legend Dustin Hoffman I was curious to see what this film had to offer. Having not read any reviews I was going to sit down unbiased and I must say, it took the me on quite an emotional journey. Read more >>
